Once Someones Gone
(Long Version Draft 1)
The air was unusually thin like something could change someone’s life forever, and it did Selwyn walked down the road to his usual place to watch his grandson play baseball. He met his daughter Crissy on one of the separate pews in the grandstand. “Hi dad Bens just about to bat, he’s been waiting for you to arrive” Crissy said in her normally bouncy tone “He knows that I will always get here eventually get here I’m an old man remember?” Selwyn said in a playful tone he finally sat down in the deck chair styled seat and started watching the game in the distance a large crash followed by various screams and ambulance sirens. “dad I forgot to ask has your cancer tests come back “Crissy said with caring voice “nah hopefully today or tomorrow but I still think I will be here to annoy my cobbras for a while” every one started cheering suddenly bens team had just scored a home run “good on ya boy that was a fine bat” Selwyn said with his wise old grandfather eyes “Hey pop where’s nana?” Ben sounded disappointed “Josie’s gone to have breakfast with the girls but she promised that she would come as soon as she can” Selwyn’s voice was apologetic “oh sorry my phones ringing “ Crissy picked up her phone even though the number on the screen came up as UNKNOWEN “um hello how can I help you?” cautiously Crissy waited for a reply “ Hello you must be Crissy yes well its Dr Gysworth here how do you do?” “ um yes it is Crissy and g old thanks um are you form the hospital?” “Yes I am Dr Gysworth in charge of general operations and notifications “Crissy knew he was calling up about Selwyn’s caner test “will he be ok dose he really have cancer?” Crissy was nervous not wanting to hear his reply “unfortunately I have some bad news, Selwyn’s cancer tests came back positive ” “?” “what’s wrong with her?” suddenly memories of the crash that they had herd this morning flashed back into her memories her heart rate pumped faster than a greyhound in pursuit of a mechanical rabbit “has she had a car crash by any chance?” By now everyone was steering at Crissy wondering what she was on about “we’ll be right there “Crissy’s voice was solemn and her body was shaking as she told everyone what she had been told on the phone.
Selwyn was still confused about the whole thing not wanting to believe that his partner of 60 years would not walk beside him any more. Dr Gysworth eventually came out of the door “I...I’m so sorry we did everything we could” His voice was soft and caring “I am sorry about the timing but you could lose your father too if we don’t stop it” Dr Gysworth handed Crissy a white envelope with Test results and Confidential written on it Crissy immediately broke down in tears “Dad you have heart cancer” after that Selwyn’s world started spinning not believing that just yesterday everything was the was it should be.
Days passed and Selwyn got slower and slower test result after test result revelled that his blood type was very rare. Crissy was cleaning out her mothers old wallet when a mysterious aqua card suddenly fell out “a...a donor card?” her eyes suddenly scanned it for her blood type a perfect match! “I can’t believe it!” and for the first time in days she felt like there was still hope she called Dr Gysworth to arrange the operation and it was a success. But no one quite new how Josie Became a donor but Selwyn spent everyday with just a little bit of his loved one with him all the time.
